Manolis Georgoulis was born and raised in Sykiada, the island of Chios, Greece. He completed his basic education in Chios and entered the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece, in 1988. He graduated in 1993 with a B.Sc. in Physics. In 1994 he initiated his Ph.D. Thesis under the supervision of Prof. L. Vlahos of AUTH. He received his Doctorate in Solar Plasma Physics in 2000, having also served a nearly 2-year military service.


Shortly thereafter (2000) he was appointed as a PostDoctoral Research Associate at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) in Laurel, Maryland, USA. He retained this position until 2003, when he was promoted to a Senior Professional Staff Physicist at JHU/APL. He returned to Greece in 2009, accepting an Associate Researcher position at the RCAAM of the Academy of Athens. In 2012 he was promoted to a Senior Researcher position at RCAAM.


Manolis Georgoulis has been awarded a PhD Scholarship by the Greek State Foundation for Scholarships (1996 - 2000), an ERASMUS Scholarship by the European Astrophysical Doctoral Network (1996 - 1997), a Special Achievement Award (JHU/APL - 2006), a Certificate of Appreciation (JHU/APL - 2008), and a Marie Curie Fellowship (2010 - 2014). He lives in Athens, Greece. He is married and a father of one.
